Posture plays a vital role in everyday comfort, mobility, and independence. Whether you're recovering from a stroke, managing a neurological condition, living with frailty, or noticing discomfort while sitting or standing, a professional postural assessment can help identify issues and guide a care plan that supports better function, comfort, and safety.

At ToT Surrey, we provide specialist postural assessments in the comfort of your own home. Our experienced occupational therapists use evidence-based tools to evaluate your posture, movement, and alignment, helping to reduce pain, improve balance, and support overall well-being.

Get in touch today to book your in-home postural assessment and take the first step toward safer, more comfortable movement.

What Is a Postural Assessment?

A postural assessment looks at how your body aligns and moves in different positions, such as sitting, lying, standing, and transitioning between these. It's especially important for people with:

  • Stroke or neurological conditions

  • Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis

  • Reduced mobility or balance

  • Long-term conditions or progressive illness

  • Chronic pain or fatigue

  • Muscle weakness or frailty

  • Risk of pressure sores or falls

We assess things like head and trunk control, sitting balance, symmetry, and joint positioning to understand how posture may be affecting your mobility, comfort, or function.

How a Postural Assessment Works

During a home visit, one of our qualified occupational therapists will guide you through a series of simple movements and positions. We’ll assess your posture in everyday activities, identify any imbalances or risks, and provide recommendations that may include:

  • Targeted physiotherapy or occupational therapy

  • Equipment such as cushions, chairs, or support aids

  • Home adjustments to improve safety and comfort

  • Strategies for carers or family members

  • Gentle exercises to improve alignment and reduce fatigue

The Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke Patients (PASS)

For individuals who have experienced a stroke, we often use the Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke Patients (PASS), a trusted clinical tool that evaluates 12 key movements related to balance and posture.

Tasks include:

  • Sitting and standing with and without support

  • Rolling in bed

  • Moving between positions (e.g. lying to sitting, sitting to standing)

  • Picking objects up from the floor

PASS helps us understand the level of postural control and where support or rehabilitation is needed.
