Postural Assessments in Hampshire

POSTURAL ASSESSMENTS IN YOUR OWN HOME IF YOU HAVE SUFFERED A STROKE, A POSTURAL ASSESSMENT WILL HELP DETERMINE THE IMPACT ON YOUR MOBILITY & THE BEST CARE PLAN FOR YOU

In the aftermath of a stroke, many patients find themselves suffering from impaired mobility, which can have a massive impact on their day-to-day life. A posture assessment, performed by a fully qualified occupational therapist, is key to developing a personalised care plan that allows patients to continue living their lives as independently as possible.

Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke Patients (PASS)
The Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke Patients (commonly referred to as PASS, or a PASS assessment) is an important tool in determining the severity of a stroke’s impact on a patient’s mobility. It is a series of twelve questions, intended to assess a patient’s balance and posture in certain everyday positions, such as standing, lying, and sitting.

How Does a PASS Assessment Work?

PASS assessments are conducted by a qualified occupational therapist and require the patient to attempt a number of standard positions and movements, each of which they will be scored against. These include sitting without support, standing with and without support, and standing on each leg on its own. From there, the therapist will see how well the patient is able to make simple movements, such as rolling from their back to either side, sitting up from a prone position, and lying back down, standing up and sitting down, and finally picking up a pencil from the floor from a standing position.

The Purpose of a PASS Assessment

Strokes can cause serious mobility issues in their sufferers, and these can have a detrimental effect on their day-to-day life. With a PASS assessment, our occupational therapists can determine the extent of a patient’s mobility issues, and create a rehabilitation plan tailored to their specific needs. These may include a course of physiotherapy, a range of simple exercises that can be performed at home, or simply some adjustments to a patient’s home, lifestyle, or daily routine that makes their everyday activities that much easier to perform.
